American Protection Plan wants everyone to be able to use this website, including people who use screen readers, magnifiers, voice control, or a keyboard instead of a mouse. Many of the people we serve are 50 and older, so we design for large text, clear buttons, and simple steps.

Our standard
We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1, Level AA, published by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C). We also follow the newer WCAG 2.2 success criteria where we can.
What we do
- Text and controls meet WCAG color-contrast minimums. Body text on our burial insurance page is 20 pixels or larger.
- Every page works with a keyboard alone, shows a visible focus outline, and has a “Skip to content” link.
- Form fields have visible labels. Errors are described in words, not by color alone, and screen readers announce them.
- Images have text descriptions. Decorative images are hidden from screen readers.
- Pages can be zoomed to 200% and read on a small phone without scrolling sideways.
- We respect your device's “reduce motion” setting, and nothing on the site flashes.
- Pop-ups can be closed with the Escape key or a clearly labeled button, and keep keyboard focus inside until closed.
- Nothing on the site has a time limit.
- We test every page with an automated checker (axe-core) and by hand with a keyboard before changes go live.
Known limitations
Insurance company logos are shown as images with the company's name as their text description. Documents we send, such as the Final Wishes Planner, may not yet be fully accessible. If you need a document in another format (large print, plain text, or read to you over the phone), ask and we will provide it.
Compatibility
The site uses standard web code (HTML with ARIA where needed) so it works with current versions of Chrome, Safari, Edge, and Firefox and with the screen readers built into phones and computers.
